The Gardens of Gethsemane Cemetery

Orthodox Christians, looking for a final resting place for their love ones that is near the church, might want to consider The Gardens of Gethsemane cemetery. Many past parishoners of Holy Epiphany have been intered at this cemetery, as well as other Orthodox Christians.   Recently, the cemetery management decided to build a chapel and create a section in the cemetery specifically for Orthodox Christians.

Please read the information below and visit the Gardens of Gethsemane website for more information.

Generous donation to our parish from the director of the Gardens of Gethsemane Cemetery, January 2015

At the patronal feast day (January 19, 2015) , the director of the Gardens of Gethsemane Cemetery, Alan MacKinnon, presented the check for five thousand dollars for our project and promises it to do this every year for 5 years. Metropolitan Hilarion thanked Mr. MacKinnon for his support of the Holy Epiphany Church and for his initiative in the construction of the Orthodox chapel at the cemetery. Fr. Victor underscored the cooperation between our parish and the Gardens of Gethsemane Cemetery.

Summer 2014 update

The Gardens at Gethsemane, along with the advice of local clergy, and our Architect, Yervant Nahikian has completed the wall and frame construction of the Byzantine style Holy Resurrection Chapel, has installed double vaults and landscaped over a half of an acre to create the Orthodox Garden.

You may help create an Eternal Orthodox Legacy by praying for us and spreading the word about this worthy project. Choosing your family's resting place in advance will allow you to select preferred lots close to the Chapel and have peace of mind that you will be among other Orthodox Christians who share the same beliefs, customs and traditions.

The Holy Resurrection Chapel will have a full iconostas where candles may be lit, memorial services may be held and prayers offered for love ones resting at The Gardens.

Placing eternal lights and planting flowers are encouraged at the Orthodox Garden. These traditions practiced for thousands of years are often forbidden at most local cemeteries.

The ability to select multiple adjacent lots is also becoming extremely difficult within the Greater Boston area.

This will be the last year we will be able to offer individual lots in the Orthodox Garden at our pre-construction price. The purchase price of these lots includes a tax deductible contribution which supports the entire project.

There are memorial features within the Orthodox Garden that will enable you to honor family members and their commitment to the Orthodox faith and traditions. A contribution to the Orthodox Garden is tax deductible and will assist us in completing this project.

For a personal tour of the Orthodox Garden and Holy Resurrection Chapel please visit the cemetery at 670 Baker Street in West Roxbury or call (617) 325-0186 .

Sept 2012 - Ground Breaking Ceremony

Orthodox Chapel Groundbreaking Ceremony
Saturday, September 29, 2012
The Gardens at Gethsemane Cemetery • Boston, MA

You are respectfully invited to the Orthodox Garden & Chapel Groundbreaking ceremony on Saturday September 29th.
We will be gathering for a light lunch and fellowship at 12:00pm noon and the ceremony starts promptly at 1:00pm.

Officiating:

His Eminence Metropolitan Methodios (Greek Orthodox Metropolis of Boston)
His Eminence Metropolitan Hilarion (First Hierarch of the Russian Orthodox Church Outside of Russia)
His Grace Bishop John Abdella (Antiochian Orthodox Diocese of Worcester and New England)

At The Gardens at Gethsemane, we are in the business of taking care of family’s needs. Our relationship with these families and the local clergy showed us an unmet need.

At the initiation of local Orthodox clergy, we started looking into building an Orthodox Garden & Chapel reserved exclusively for Orthodox families. We had meetings with local Clergy, and upon their advice, The Gardens at Gethsemane decided to establish and dedicate an Orthodox Garden & Chapel that offers the community a place to gather during burial services and other calendar events, where families can observe and practice customs and traditions and pass them on to the next generation.

There is no cemetery in the Boston area that has a Byzantine Chapel and Resting Garden dedicated solely to the Orthodox faith; a place where families can practice the customs and traditions passed on from generation to generation and are part of a community with the same beliefs. These customs and traditions have been practiced for over a thousand years and are not allowed in most cemeteries.

This project will be a national model for the country and is the only Orthodox Cemetery Chapel of its kind in New England.

  • The Chapel will be a place to gather, pray, light candles, perform the liturgy and serve as a memorial to the Orthodox Faith.
  • The Resting Garden will provide a dignified respectful way of burial according to customs and traditions.
  • The Orthodox Garden and Chapel will have its own Endowment Fund to help maintain this beautiful area in perpetuity. This Endowment Fund will also help promote and support Orthodox endeavors.

This endeavor can become a reality only with the support of a “United Orthodox Community”.

For more information about the chapel or to view the resting garden, please visit the cemetery at 670 Baker Street in West Roxbury located just off the VFW Parkway (Rt 1) on the Newton line.

Please call 617-325-0186. We are available nights and weekends. You may also visit our website at thegardenscemetery.org and follow the links to the Orthodox Garden and Chapel.
